Lagrein - Old Vines

Lagrein - Old Vines

Despite some earlier references to a white Lagrein, the current red grape gets its first mention in 1526 and seems to derive its name from the Val Lagarina in Trentino, northern Italy.

Once again DNA analysis has helped enormously. Lagrein is a cross between Teroldego and an unknown variety which means it is a grandchild of Pinot and a cousin of Syrah.

It is mostly found in the Alto Adige and Trentino but there are also some plantings in California and Australia.

The red wines are characterised by a deep colour with strong berry flavours and medium tannins.

More rustic than fully refined, but a lovely chewy mouthful.
