The Wine

Details

A nose of hazelnuts followed by pink grapefruit. In the mouth, the wine balances creamy honeyed notes with refreshing citrus notes. Serve with summer salads sprinkled with roasted nuts, with Sunday roast pork or creamy pasta dishes or, as attested by a customer, with "Moroccan spiced (cumin and coriander) fish cakes with Indian-spiced (turmeric) potatoes and spiced (cumin and cayenne) pea / tomato medley. It was a perfect pairing!"

Ben says (September 2017): A first impression would seem to indicate that this is a Riesling. Of course it is not. Whilst the aroma and flavour descriptions still fit to an extent (the hazelnut has given way to a more petrol aroma, hence the grape confusion), this wine has gained some real elegance and depth with age. The food pairing that sprang to mind (Joelle's mind) was for a saffron infused creamy seafood dish.

It is a wine-lover's wine and only for those who deserve it. Treat it with reverence and you will get a return beyond that for which you may have hoped.

Buy, buy, buy.

Bergsatz

A beautiful wine still in its youth 10 years + on. Just off dry, it has lively acidity and great depth of spice-edged apple and tropical fruit flavours. Frankly, it's ridiculous that Alpine Wines are selling this at a reduced price. It would appear to have years ahead of it. This would be steal at its full price.
Buy, buy, buy and take advantage of this merchant's generosity. You won't regret it.

Incredibly good

Bergsatz 2009, HOFBAUER

Absolutely superb - one of the most surprisingly delicious wines I've drunk in a while. Golden in the glass, slightly off-dry, and perfectly rich - creamy, almost oaky, with stewed fruit and peaches, all matched by good acidity. Had it with seafood risotto and couldn't have been better - I can't recommend it enough.

A lovely wine!

Bergsatz

This is a lovely wine - although I try to avoid white wines above 13% this is irresistible, with a remarkable succulent balance of acidity and sweetness, and not the least sign of age. I've been drinking it over several days as an aperitif - I'm so glad I bought 3 bottles!
